Heard that some winter grasses are good for my gouldians to eat, and use for nesting material. Went scouting today, and came home with a few different types. Any of these suitable? and did I manage to find swamp grass?

Cheers,
Greg

Agree VT and yes all safe to use and the finer ones for nesting material after the seeds are eaten but some finches use with seeds attached.Out of all of them,my birds prefer panic veldt grass. Craig

I think the second one may be what I call ratstail. I think it may be related to the plantains but not sure. I too have fed all these to my birds with no worries :)

The 2nd one I just call wild millet. It has similar shape to setaria but is softer, sweeter flavour and is an annual. Much better as a finch food than setaria & not at all related to plantain (not even a grass).
1st one is Summer grass. Much larger & softer than couch & is also an excellent grass seed for finches - rivals panic veldt & barnyard as top finch tucker.
I'm not familiar with the last one - doesn't occur here locally. Looks like it may be best to let the head open out a bit further before picking for more mature (useful) green seed.
