My Gouldian set-up UPDATE

Here is my Gouldian home, I am happy with it, bar needing another breeding box (just incase one pair fights over one), but unsure where it would fit nicely. Would love to get at least one nest this year.





Question...I have one female Gouldian that keeps calling....any ideas why?

Which hen is calling? Blue ring or red ring? If it's the red ring she may have bonded with a different male in the next cage and she is calling to him.

it's blue ring. She's happy, drinking eating etc, just wondered why she is so vocal. The other cage has zebs, but maybe she is hearing wild birds that sound similar? It's basically rural here, a ton of bird life.

Do you have full spectrum uv lighting? Gouldians have a high dependence for sunlight...in my experience, any birds inside have become egg bound due to this. The uv metabolises calcium. I believe that sunlight through glass is no good. The glass filters out the uv. Sorry don't mean to be negative.

I open the garage door on the right of the cage, and they get sunlight. The cage is less than 1 mtr away from the rollerdoor. I hope this is sufficient, because housing them outside is nothing but problems due to attacks from butcher birds, australian mynas, and owls! The zebs used to live outside on the verandah, but the abuse was just too much.

Being that your Gouldians are housed in an all wire cage with nowhere to hide and no protection from peering eyes, I would be surprised if either pair went to nest. Its a common mistake that people often make, but this is something worth considering if you haven't already

I'd be keeping an eye on those butcherbirds. I used to breed Zebras in cabinets set up in the garage. Everyday I'd open the roller door which was at the opposite end of shed. one day a Grey Butcher killed 3 Zebs. Once it knew where there was an easy food source he would return daily despite the guards I had put in place. The news soon spread to the Pied Butcher community and they also tried their luck daily. They had no dramas flying 5m into the shed, brave and cunning sods.
