I have had many mixed head colour pairings in the past without detriment and have been recently combining head colours (black & yellow) in a targetted attempt to develop some quality yellow-headeds with some of the desirable features of my black-headed birds. This is proving to be a slow process but encouraging enough for me to continue into the season's ahead. By using mating combinations which result in known genotype progeny from each pair it is possible to continue different pairing options between the 2 head colours without confusion or relying on pot-luck to achieve a desirable outcome. Doing it with regular reference to the head colour breeding expectation tables is an excellent way to take the guess work out mixing Gouldian head colours, the perfect way to learn first-hand more about genetic inheritence and the relationships between the various Gouldian head colours.
