Other Names:
at times mistakenly called Pileated Finch in some circles, this name belongs to a related species.

Description:
Adult – Cock: Underparts crimson, flecked with brown on the chest, off-white chin patch bordered with some black, rump and upper tail coverts rich crimson, back of head down through the back is brown with a suffusion of red, primary and secondaries also brown with some crimson underlay. Tail dark brown upper, greyish below. When the crest is lowered it is seen as two black lines through the centre of the skull; when raised, the crest is a beautiful vermillion with black edging. The bill is a pearl colour, legs and feet bluish grey. Approx length 140mm (14cm).
Adult - Hen: Paler version of the male with a smaller crest not raised to the same extent as the male's crest.

Juveniles –: Brown all over with some brown flecking. Greyish head with noticeable white markings.

Incubation Period: 12 to 15 days
Leave nest: 11 to 13 days, being cup nesters young often fledge then hide in undergrowth.
