So, I bought my first pair of painted firetails yesterday and put them in a holding cage for the evening. The cage has a roosting nest, a couple of perches, and some brush. When I checked the birds in the evening, I expected to see the pair perched, as I'd heard and read that they don't use a roosting nest. But there they were, tucked into the roosting nest.

Can anyone else confirm painteds using a roosting nest?

Yes painteds being more so a ground bird prefer a flat surface rather than a perch to roost on at night, if a roosting nest is available they will use it. Craig

Thanks, Craig. So although all the texts (Gorman, Kingston etc) say they don't build a roosting nest, that's not to say they won't use one. Cool! That should help them get through some of the chilly evenings up here!
