I am well aware of African Boxthorn's noxious weed status, but it grows well here and seed dispersal won't be a problem in an aviary. Will give it a try along with the other species I have mentioned. I have pruned a few of a number of species out in the scrub to see how they respond to pruning.

I don't know what grows around Moree but around Tamworth, where I grew up, the finches loved spiky bushes - particularly wild roses, black berries and the native blackthorn (Bursaria spinosa). I saw seedling of of the latter at the Narrandera forestry commission nursery when I lived down that way a few years ago so it may be available locally at your equivalent. They are nice shrubs and not too big for an aviary, not too spiky that you can't handle it and not a declared noxious weed.
