Welcome to the Forum from another of the WA contingent. Sounds like a good sized avairy you are planning. Can you face it north? or if not east. And good protection from the Freo Doctor is essential in winter.

Hi FB

The aviary would be along the back fence facing north and will get good sunlight from most of the year. My backyard is pretty protected due to high fences on most sides and an existing limestone retaining walls to hold it all up. I have the chook shed along the same side and the chooks love it. I think the heat is something to think about though. In the height of summer I usually spray the chook pen and sometimes the chooks themselves if they are showing signs of heat stress. I did lose two of my girls last year to heat (40 deg +). This year I have extended the my vege bed rectic to spray onto the chook coop on very hot days. I could imagine rigging up a fine mist system for an aviary to cool things down?

the heat is something to think about though.
Pity you can't build in the shade of a nice deciduous tree like I have. Makes a big difference. If you can have the birds water on auto retic so it flushes a couple of times in the heat of the day that is good. Mine is set to flush as 11AM and 3PM, and we are usually a couple of degrees warmer up here than the city. Putting the water bowl on bricks so the birds can get under it can also work well sometimes.

Thanks FB. The spot it is to go is against the back fence so it will get some shade. I also figure that 70% shade cloth atop a poly clear roof might also work to keep things relatively cool. might be cooler than a solid tin roof? I have a nice deciduous tree but its at the top section of the backyard and that area is off limits to my hobbies etc. I will be putting a lot of thought into this so I am no hurry.

Hi Greg, :wave: I am in Willagee (SOR) which is 5m from Freo. Can you reccomend any good places to buy finches here in Perth? I have been looking at Swan Valley birds which seem to have a good selection of finches. For starting off I think firetails fit the bill ;-) (no pun intended) and maybe stars or zebras in another flight cage. I hope to get an aviary up by hopefully by early next year.

If you put a post in the wanted section you'll get some local breeders reply and a chance to look at their set ups. Much cheaper also. The aviaculture club also sells birds the last Sunday of each month where you will also get some good quality birds very reasonably priced.

Just had a gander at their website. Open day coming up 26th October. Will check it out to see what they've got that might suit
