I seen a post recently on a bird photography Facebook page. Someone had taken a photo of a juvenile Beautiful firetail in the lower Blue mountains of NSW.
I have never heard of them being in that area of NSW.
Anyone else heard of them being found in the mountains?

They're moderately common throughout the mountains in suitable habitat.

Saw them often in the Royal National Park, just south of Sydney when I was a Scout, many years ago. Always thought that they were some sort of red head with spots, which were fairly common. Bearing in mind that at that time (mid 60's) I had finches but did not even know they existed. My world was the more common finches, Zebs, Red heads, Longtails, Javas, Mannakins. Anything after that was just dreaming stuff. Saw them again in the bush around the camping area at Bendalong (Redhead) just short of Milton/Ulladulla many years later. Wish I knew then what I know now, camera would have been good. They are beautiful birds and would love to have a lash. Maybe later on.

Ken.

I am just shy of halfway up the mountains and have never seen them here, redbrows on the other hand are in abundance in my yard most days, maybe i might get lucky one day in the future when we move back down the hill a bit.

Hey Norse,

You're more likely to see Beautifuls higher in the mountains ie Wentworth Falls, Katoomba, Mt. Victoria. In saying that they can be found in the moist gullies at lower altitudes

We have a deep moist gully behind us and get a lot of the rarer mountains birds come into the yard just not firetails yet, maybe its time for too look a bit harder from now on.
Note, having just spoken with my brother ( who is a member of the conservation society in the mountains ) he told me just down the road from me he saw what he believes where beautifuls, so looks like im of for an adventure with the camera.
