I try to bury mine so that the water comes out cool during the summer months, also it helps with the pipe so that it doesn't break down with sun shinning on it,most plastic popes should be kept out of direct sun light, garyh

If you are refering to the drinkers commonly used for pet rats etc. Generally speaking the answer is not in an avairy or bird cage, as many birds will die of thirst unaware of how to drink from these. If you are refering to the pipe taking water into your avairy, as per what garyh said. Most birdkeepers use drinkers where the water is visible and the same as what the birds are used to, but you can and many of us do, slowly convert them to different drinkers by putting two types in and once they are used to the new type remove the old type. Most birds also like to bathe so take that into consideration.
