As she was in a hospital cage when she laid the egg, why does it matter if there are other hens in the avairy? Has she successfully gone to nest with the cock is what we want to know?

Interesting post but I'm a little confused and I think others are as well.

So to clear things up I believe a egg is a clear indication that this bird is a hen.
I now ask, where there any cocks housed in the same place as this hen prior to laying the egg.

If there was no cock it's a very high possibility this egg is infertile so nothing will be gain from fostering it.
And if there is no cock you need to get one ASAP and test breed with a unmutated normal bird.

Breed the bird and work backwards when in doubt of bird genetics.
