Was a pretty hot day today and close to 30C when considering the overnight temp was a low 10C it was quite a temp change. I noticed the diamonds were feeling the pressure

It's been a stinker in Melbourne today. 40 in my Gouldian aviary at 2PM.

The Gouldians have been fine, but the Siskens seemed to struggle whilst the sun was directly on their aviary. Once the sun passed over the top of their aviary they seemed OK. Did my bit by changing their water bowls 3 times today, turning on the sprinkler system on the roof for 30 minutes each hour and placed some chipboard over the laser light above their aviary.

At 6PM all birds now seem comfortable and it looks like the bite of the sun has died down. Just another 7 days in the low 30's to look forward to, but the birds have shown anything under 35 doesn't concern them too much.

Happy NY all.

Cheers
Paul

It has been a stinker down here today,It was 45 in the bird room.

I agree the Gouldians seem to cope with the heat but the parrot finches not so much. no losses though

Just got home after going away on the 28th. Got to 44 while we were away, and while I have not been down cause it's dark. No "so sorry to have to tell you" notes from Mum (sitter extrordinare) so I figure that as usuall they have taken the heat in their stride. Auto watered twice a day does help.

If the Aviary has a bit of shade from its roof, the birds can cope with a lot of heat.
My suggestion is to have a lot of water bowls in different areas, and to stay away from the aviary while the major heat is about.
The birds will take to the ground to beat the heat. Melbourne yesterday was 41 degrees. all birds fine, except a nest of very young Redface, which left the nestbox, put them back at twilight. alls well.
