I've never showed birds but would very much like to have a go at it some time. The problem is that my Gouldians are the birds I'd like to show & most bird shows within an hour or so of my place are mid-breeding season for Gouldians so my best birds are busy feeding young or incubating at those times. January would be the ideal time for showing Gouldians as they have just finished their moult & are in prime condition then & most birds are not actively breeding until a bit later than that. There doesn't seem to be any shows in January though.

Possibly it is considered too hot to catch, travel etc at that time of year.

A bit of a double edge sword so to speak.

When i was breeding show budgies we basically selected our show birds for the season and didnt breed with them just prepared them for show. Id use best available thereafter to breed with.

Probably not a working formula for gouldians though as wed all like to breed with the best birds available.
