Veldt oats

Here is another one I am trying to get established from Africa.I am getting a reasonable little patch going its hard fighting mother nature keeping the other weeds out though. I have been only feeding it to bigger finches due to my short supply currently. Apparently Its Quite commonly used in Tassie and S.A ?

This, or a grass very like it is common in WA.
It is often referred to as Algerian oats
Grows profusely in the spring, but is almost finished seeding now.
Once the hot weather comes it dries off pretty quickly

Same here in Leichhardt, Sydney, heaps in the park along Hawthorne Canal.

Very common in this part of WA right through for about 6/7 months of the year. My finches do half of their rearing on it. So common am now pulling up dried up plants and binning them to reduce fire hazzard for the summer, as we just had out first 41 degree end of spring day.

I have a patch and poisoned the grass many times got it cultivated collected some seed and a mate sent me a heap. planted it like grass tender loving care etc.. it stated off then I went away for a few months to come home to it full of cape weed and other stuff that must have been in the soil. Atleast have some now to continue with at home.

Heaps of this grass in my area,feed to the birds every chance i get,the birds love it,dying of now,but the good news is the winter grass has finally taken off ,so picking this at the moment,garyh

Took me a long time to find about "Algerian oats"as they are often referred to in WA. Now fairly certain this is Annual Veldt grass and the red grass that grows here is the Perennial Veldt Grass. Both are loved by all my finches and parrots. Seem to have a lot of nourishment for breeding birds and also very well used for nest lining. Grows profusely here and is in last stages for this year except around my fruit and olive trees which are on drip lines.
