Hi again,
I have a gouldian cock that has moulted with a pale purple chest, other colours as per normal gouldian cock. Any ideas why? I don't have any white chested gouldians in the aviary. IMO it is definitely a cock bird as it sings and chats up other gouldians. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

More likely you do have the white chested gene without knowing it....... :problem:

Most likely its the lilac breasted mutation and your parent birds were split to White breasted

Breast colour is autosomal recessive, so I would say your parent hen and cock are both split for the lilac gene (i.e., both are Purple split Lilac). Nothing to do with the white gene, in my humble opinion.

Nice looking cock there Masterfincher

Not up to speed as much as I should be on Gouldian genetics, but I believe that 'lilac-breast' is ASR to 'normal' but ASD to 'white-breast'

While l-b is a beautiful mutation, a lot of Gouldian breeders avoid it like the plague as they are of the opinion that it will eventually eliminate the visual w-b

Gouldian experts will no doubt give us more info . .

He says all his other finches look normal...so according to geneitc forecastor ...hen could be purple breast split white...cock purple split lilac...would appear normal... but 12.5% chance of throwing lilac cock bird...so I still say white breast genes in there some where...lilac or not

I think I follow. Definitely something there, just strange nothing has showed up before as I've had the parents for over 3 years with several broods per season. Thanks everyone!

You are right Arthur, some where in his gouldians is a split WB. Usually LB is produced from that bird after a few generations and a mating from two birds carrying the WB gene. Because it has been hidden for so long and the purple breast is dominant it comes out a dirty white breast and a night mare for pure white/white breasted breeders, in other words unless you cull/sell it your stuck with it in all your WB birds.
