WELCOME to the AFF, Michelle. Be sure to hop over to the introductions page and say hi.

You may or may not have noticed that this thread is 5 years old, but the information is still fairly current.

As a personal choice, I like Moxidectin or Moxidectin Plus as a drench wormer but prefer Ivermectin (Avimec) for mite problems, particularly scaly face mite. I use the breast location in the belief that, when preening, the bird gets a little topical application as well as absorption into the blood supply through the skin, although the effectiveness of my theory is unproven.
As you can see, from this thread, there is divided opinion on the choice for air sac mite.

The dosage for Avimec for finches is one drop to the skin per week for three consecutive weeks (total treatment 3 drops per finch over 3 weeks).
Always re-check dosage on the bottle after reading advice as, depending on the medication, consequences of improper application can be dire.

Welcome to the Aussie Finch Forum, Michelle. Based on your information your gouldian finch might have bird flu. Take the finch to the vet and keep him separated from the others.
Have a nice day!

Only take it to the vet if you have more dollars than sense. Treat with moxy & that should deal with the problem. Air sac mite is your bird's issue not flu.

Hi Cathy,
Apparently, some birds get symptoms similar to the human 'cold' but I have had no experience with this.
Don't be too worried about finches contracting bird flu.
My understanding of Avian Bird Flu in this country, is that birds kept indoors have no chance of contracting it unless their keepers work with birds elsewhere, or birds from outdoor aviaries are brought into close contact with them. Birds kept outdoors in a roofed aviary have virtually no chance of contracting it, and birds kept outdoors in an unroofed aviary still have just a minimal chance of contracting it. I have no first hand knowledge of it being a problem in finch aviculture in Australia, but what I have read might be outmoded information, so I would be keen to read any relevant articles if you have any new references (for my own education).

Airsac mite is a fairly common problem with Canaries and Gouldians. Bird flu is fairly uncommon even in chickens and pigeons. So I would plump for Airsac mite. Due to having 4 avairys of finches I use Ivamec from the vet and dose in the water as per vets instructions on the bottle. Welcome to the forum Michelle. Do you just keep Gouldians or other finches also?

I’d like to buy some from here too please.
I don’t have any issues but want to mix up how I’m worming etc. Do you use with coccivet too or is that unnecessary? I’ve just bought a new bottle
Thank you
Nat
