I agree, remove the problem before it gets older
I'm telling you now Brisbane Finches, catch and take it away, even if it is premature, or otherwise you WILL have problems and birds will be getting killed left, right, front and center
Thanks

Hi everyone,

Well, the Butcherbird’s back at it again, except this time he’s sitting in the thick shrub behind my aviary, which is in my neighbour’s yard, and since my new aviary is much bigger, I can’t get to him when he’s on the wire part of the roof. He’s still in his juvenile plumage, but he can fly very well now. Any suggestions?

Buy some fruit netting, put it over the aviary, and invest in a sling shot and thats about all you can do mate

The netting can just be draped over the avairy. That's what we did to keep the hawk from getting mums budgies through the wire. Mind you she already has double wire. And I think the net worked because the hawk got its talons tangled and had to pull loose. But any extra layer is better than none.

A mate of mine recommended putting palm leaves on top of the flight section of the aviary to alter rainfall, so I think I'll do that, because it might deter that pesky butcherbird too. I'll also put some fruit netting down the front.

Thanks

Observe the plant matter on the wire roof, as it will hold moisture and cause the wire to rot out faster. Good short term solution but.

Assuming you don't want a fatal solution to the problem. If you can get your hands on a short length of 15mm pvc or conduit pipe you can make a cheap and nasty glove gun. Cut a finger off an old pair of rubber gloves and duct tape it to one end of the pipe so pipe is inside piece of finger. Leave enough hanging off the end so you can drop something in pipe and stretch out the glove finger. Very low power compared to a slingshot so not likely to kill the bird or hurt it much really. Every time you see it shoot something through leaves near it or at whatever its perched on. You don't need to hit it as the constant and erratic bombardment will not be much fun for the bird.
Great idea, will try that.
