Hi, I've ordered a bale of lucerne for mulch in my vegetable patches . Is Lucerne a good option for nesting material ? Or hay or straw even ?
Thanks in advance

Yes I know for a fact that straw is all good to use, as a lot of breeders used it on the floors for the twinspots (back in the day while they were still here in Aus)
Thanks

I mostly use couch grass. But a mixture of grasses and plant matter should be tried as different birds have different preferences. Bit like peeople really.

If you have Painteds, go with hardwood bark, even just a pile in the corner, they love it, for there nests.

I have used Lucerne previously in Gouldian nest boxes - just make sure it is the "soft" grassy type and not the "stalky" first cut 100% type.

Have also had my Ruddies and Orange Breasts raid the nests for the really soft grasses.
