Plenty of feral populations around Townsville, Cairns, Gladstone, and Innisfail . I was in Townsville in June and saw plenty around the mouth of the Ross River and feeding in front yards and on the edge of footpaths in Railway Estate. They like to build their nests in palm tree seed pods.

They're completely illegal here in SA. Interestingly, when an article on the spice finch went out with the AFF newsletter, I got a rather stern email from the Department of Primary Industry.

Not aware of the situation in WA - but they do look nice when I have seen them on-line. Shane maybe you need to put a line in all articles, saying Please remember to check the legal situation in your State re the keeping of birds discussed. As an exercise in a covering.

Better save the Spicies, or otherwise they will go the same way of the Javan Munia
Thanks
