I'm very interested in buying a finch breed that takes live food, such as mealworms.

I'm trying to find out which breeds are most likely to take mealworms.

I've read that cutthroats take live food enthusiastically.

Is it true?

Any other breed suggestions?

Eat copius amounts when they have chicks.

Not so much at other times.

Other species suggestions for finches that take Livefood are Orange-Breasted Waxbills and African Firefinches, however they need other live-food sources such as bushfly maggots.

Most of the African finches and weavers take insects, as do any and all quails, pheasants, chickens and other ground dwelling birds.

If you want insect eating finches, get more types of insects going. Keep wingless fruit flies, earwigs, earthworms, aphids, small crickets and flour weevils.

If you want birds to breed for money, most of the Australian finches are easy to breed and sell readily, but they don't normally eat live foods.
