A short time ago, I had 8 Gouldians in the one clutch. They are colouring up well now. Cock parent had a red head and the hen had yellow head. Both green backs with white breast.
All young are colouring as expected except one who has a black head.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Yes I have. Dad is split for Black as it is sexlinked. In my case the parents were both Yellow headed normals, which I had thought to be pure, as this was their 3rd year. Split genes just turn up at the most unexpected times.

As finchbreeder stated it is the result of the cock bird being split black head.
The black headed offspring will be hens.
All will be split yellow head.
Male offspring may additionally be split black head.
