Does anyone have some recommendations on what species prefer to nest in boxes or baskets?

I’m in Melbourne, VIC.

Boxes, gouldians, parsons, longtails, cut throats, blue and red face parrot finches, crimsons so mostly Australian finches.
All others will accept cane domed ready made nests in particular African finches.
But in saying that other than gouldians all finches will build their own nests in dry brush if you supply them with the right nesting materials if you have a large aviary. Smaller cages gives no option than to
use nest boxes or cane baskets.
How big is your aviary or cage and how many prs do have or expect to have.

Thanks Craig!

I'm going to have the following pairs in a 4mx4m planted:

3 x Gouldian
1 x Star
1 x Painted Firetail
1 x Double Bar
1 x Scarlet Chested (parrots)

I think I'll chuck a canary pair in there too. I don't want them nesting in the bushes if at all possible because I'm setting up nesting sites in the protected area of the aviary.

The Gouldians will nest in boxes, the Stars , Painted and DB's will all build their own nest.
Put any manner of nesting recepticles in the aviary, but they will build where they chose to build.

The canaries will shred your plants, you have been warned.

Cheers

The dry area would be perfect for cut brush fixed to the wall. I used poly pipe about 300mm long fixed to the wall as a brush holder, 50mm can take two or three branches around 1.2 metres long. Common coastal tea tree is the best lasting a couple of years.
Agree, canaries will strip anything green and eventually kill them pretty quickly
