Bloody butcherbirds, I had a pair of lovely little white finches that have had 5 babies. They are all grey and fluffy and had put them in a cage as next week I was giving the lot to a friend who has a nice new aviary. Outside I always cover the cage with shade cloth and peg it down. Having a cup of tea and enjoying watching them the phone rang, I was on the phone for 10 minutes and when I came out 3 babies and dad were dead. I had not covered the front of the cage up went I went in. There was a butcher bird on top of the cage he had pulled the heads through the wire. I was so upset as I am so fussy in looking after my birds. This has taught me a very hard lesson it only takes a few minutes for a butcher bird to cause so much destruction.

Yes never underestimate them , they would have been watching and waiting for an opportunity to attack .
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

Shame their a Native, extermination would be a pleasure. About 15 years ago I had a Grey butcher bird kill my male King Parrot & take the eye out of the hen in one go. She survived but never breed again. I do stress that it was a Grey Butcher Bird though, I only have trouble with the Pieds when they are young, the adults don't bother the birds for some reason, not that I'm comlaining, they are a beautiful bird.
