Losses from the cold

I have lost 4 gouldian fledgelings on the -4 morning we had here, very disappointing but at least the rest of my birds seem to be going well.

I was thinking thank goodness I dont have fledglings to worry about apart from 1 quarrion which is wheeled into the garage at night with the parents , then today I noticed the Rosy Bourkes are doing the shift thing with the nest box .
One is always inside the box so Im assuming there are eggs in there and its their first time too.
With this being such a harsh winter here Im hoping we dont get the dreaded August winds this year .
It really is a worry and I dread taking that first look around the avairy / cages each morning.

I have lost three Ruddy chicks when the overnight temp went from around 6 to 3 degrees but no more casulaties even though temps over night have been down as low as the minus 7 area. I think the parents abandoned the chicks more than the cold getting them as they are both very young parents and I was unaware they had produced eggs let alone paired.

As everyone keeps saying if you can exclude the draughts the birds will with stand the cold better.

actually the quaker parakeets (quarrions) are native to south america and mexico area, and the dubbo population is an escaped captive one, or an introduced one

Actually a Quarrion is a Cockatiel Jay or a Weero in aboriginal tongue ...Australias smallest member of the Cockatoo family . And very native to the Central West Slopes and Plains.
Dont know of any Quakers loose around here .

Me too , always wanted a hand reared Black Cockatoo but the beaks are well equipped to remove fingers lol the Quarrion is just the right size , though they still pack a bite like a pitbull at times.

lost my cordon male yesterday and my dad has lost a painted and some zebras only the strong seem to survive

Hi Guy's,We lost a couple of gouldians at the start of the frosts here in Nth East Vic and 2 young just out of the nest,so i dragged every gouldian inside much to my wife's disgust LOL ;) Due to breeding parrots i was unprepaird for the winter so i am going to rebuild to suit the finches ,a good thing that came of it was that when they were put inside i notices that they had mites,So did they really die of the cold or was that just what toped them off,anyway poor things atleast all the rest have been treated, and i learnt a lesson about quarantine or should i say a refresher..... Going to try heated towle racks on their side hanging from the roof... Any Thoughts, mabey i should start a new topic ,well thanks guys but i have to go .. regards wayne
