Grass seeds

I though i would share this idea that was given to me by a old finch breeder, you collect the grass seeds , hang them in a old seed bag for a couple of days then shake all the seeds of the heads will there in the bag, once this is done there will sill be seed left on the head so lay it out on a sheet of ply and scrap it of with a ruler, ofter this place all seed into a ham bag (not a hand bag) and tie it very tight so it doesn't come undone and place it into the dryer for about one and a half hours. After you remove it from the dryer take the seed out and put into a styrofoam box and keep the lid on, this will last till it is all used, great to be able to stock up for the periods that you can't get any, if you need any more info please contact me.

I do almost the exact opposite. any green seed heads I get that are surplus to daily requirements are put in the freezer for use later on. am always in the proverbial with the missus for taking up her freezer space

yep i freeze them to. iam lucky i have a fridge dedicated to the birds. freezer with frozen soft food and seed heads fridge with maggots and mealies. its funny when the mother inlaw grabs one of my marg containers full of yummy stuff.she never learns...pete

My grass seeds get frozen too. I also have a dedicated bird fridge with all the goodies in it. Would love to see the mother in law open a marg container with maggots. Now that would be priceless.
As far as dried grass seeds go. I do think it has merit, though very time consuming. I buy as many different herb seeds as I can get and throw them all together and feed them in a seperate dish.

Yes Matt very time consuming, took me half a day to fill a 2lt bottle.

Sounds like my only attempt at collecting casuarina seed. Whole bucket = about a cup of seed.

Yes i know what you mean, might try the freezer but will have to chuck out all the meat to make room.
