You didn't say what time of the day you released them.
Losses are generally stress related or the following
Not enough time to drink and feed
Unable to locate new feeding or drinking sites quickly enough, in particular water
Not enough time to settle in before roosting time
Unable to find suitable roosting places out of the weather.
Hot summer months are no where near as critical.
It could bo one or a number of the above.
As for releasing into a bigger aviary, if they are released early in the day and they can feed and drink I can't see it as a problem.
