Ok guys now im pretty well sure ive got a cock bird here. But i dont hear it or see it puff up and sing like my other birds. And ive just been pretty unsure. Plans are to pair it with one of my new whitbreasted black headed hens that i bred.

Please let me know what you all think??? It sings that same kind of whistle like my hens do. But im yet to see it puff up a do the whole male shrilling thing to attract a hen. I got my self in a world of confusion :notsure: . Also i got it becuz i just wanted to try a full yellow bird a see how i go. Its a beautiful bird and a real goer. Its still in quarantine. I was seriously hoping for it to maybe be a hen as i wouldnt need any other birds then and i would have it for my spare cock birds that i decided to hang onto.

Hi Ben,

well, it's 50/50 and my first instinct on seeing the first pic was that it was a cockbird...but then...looking at all the other pictures I am now convinced it is a hen! lol

So well done on including lots of pics because that certainly helped me make my mind up.

Of course, you could always put it in a holding cage with a known cock bird and a known hen and see which one it goes for!

Nice looking bird BTW, Good luck ;)

I vote cockbird too: yellow of the tummy and the faint blue line behind the head which yellows wouldnt normally have anyways. Leave him in a cage with a definite hen or two and see if he will sing. Maybe it's a (rare in OZ) lilac brasted.

I reckon lilac breasteds are far more common then is realised, probably being passed off as hens by people who don't know...

brightly coloured isn't always an indicator... it's hard to tell without a definite cock/hen with it, but yes put it in a cage with some known hens and see if it sings, as suggested :)
