this is my first gouldian chick, fostered by societies, and he's now 20 days old.
I was told most chicks die between weaning and moulting , is that right??
Does he look OK for his age? Does he look as a 20 days gouldian should look? (I held him yesterday in my hand and he's surprisingly heavy!)
Well done, he looks like a healthy specimen. He looks just like he should for his age and he will be fledging soon.
While I wouldnt go as far to say that most young die between weaning and moulting, it is a very stressful time on their systems and some deaths can occur.

thank you for your replies!
I think he will be fledging very soon. Yesterday afternoon I could hear lots of "noises" inside the nest, as if he was doing some wing-exercises!
And the societies spent much more time outside the nest, flying back and forth... Maybe they were telling the chick to be brave and jump out!
Also, the chick was making a sort of "bip-bip" call, different from the usual "I-want-to-be-fed" , and Gouldians in the aviary seemed to be answering him (they can't see the chick, but they can hear it)
Yes, I know... lots of wishful thinking :-D
he did fledge!!! just before noon.
After abt. half an hour nor moving from the cage bottom, he started moving up and down. He has to practice the landing technique, because his calculations are quite wrong.
