I'm wondering, when you introduce new plants whether you worry about fertiliser, most, if not all nursery plants would have it in the soil wouldn't they? Is it dangerous to finches???

cant imagine it being too good for them , maybe a layer of small stones on top of the soil will fix the problem.

Most fertilizers used are synthetic and the majority are poisonous either do as Deb says or remove the top 1 inch and replace with uncontaminated soil and firm down.
