Beak trimming

There's lots said about nail trimming but what do you do with a bird who has a beak like this star (not mine). Even if you do trim it can the trait be inherited?

Hallo Greg. I have had to trim the odd beak over the years. Whether or not it is hereditary I don't know. As can be seen from the photograph, this Star cannot close its beak properly so wil not be able to eat properly either. My suggestion is to trim part of the upperbeak away so the upper and lower beak allign better and than fine tune the allignment using a nailfile of the type that my wife has in her drawers. I have found in the past that this operation is better done with two people. The bird will thank you for it. Cheers, Case

I agree with Case- file it down.

It is very unlikely to be hritable in my opinion.

The whole beak doesnt look right ...the bottom beak looks longer .... or is it just me ?

It looks like it's just being pushed forward a bit by the overgrowth.

Im not sure what the correct method is,But in the past I have trimmed back a beak like that with nail scissors.

I took care of one of my hens last night. Good eyeglasses and a pair of baby nailclippers, she looks good as new :thumbup:
Being over run by my kids and fids.
