Thinking about getting some blue capped cordon bleus - expensive. anyone got any tips as to keeping/breeding them? My main problem is lack of termites, though I do have other livefoods.
I;m getting them to help boost numbers of this comparatively rare bird in australian birdkeeping, so hoping to get a couple of generations.
I know of a few breeders that have them in NSW, victoria, tasmania, but getting to them is gonna be a big problem, as the father isn't gonna drive from Canberra to tamworth for a dew birds!

Once you have been around awhile you generally can get birds picked up using friends and contacts.
An example, Blue Caps from Tamworth,if its not the actual breeder then there are also others travelling to Orange Bird Sale 6th March. Then there is at least one finch breeder who lives in Canberra who regularly attends. So with a little luck and cooperation you can get your birds to Canberra.
If you need help getting birds send me an email.

H E Orix,
Thanks. Some help getting some would be great! a few people from the finch club here attend the Orange sale, and I saw a few blue caps at the our sale last march here in canberra. I didn't have the room or money then (damn it!) so didn't get them.
Orange may be a bit far to drive, but maybe I can get a lift with the finch club. I'm going to contact some of the breeders who I know have them and ask if they're coming on holidays past canberra and if they are can they drop off a couple of birds.
when you say there is at least one finch breeder in canberra who attends, does that mean just a finch breeder or a finch reeder with blue caps:?:
another problem for me to overcome is if some of these birds may be illegal. I'd have to check the breeders records.
I know, for example, that a breeder who has bred them goes to gunnedah for the big sale sometimes. if he stops here in Canberra on the way, I may be able to score a pair or 2.

mate be warned the hens can be very susseptable to egg binding in the cold , thats why when you do see them there are a lot of males , because if i were breeding them i would be stashing a few girls for safe keeping......pete

Sorry, Keven, Commander says no. maybe another time (and wedding).
Thanks very much for the offer though, and maybe we'll meet one day.
otherwise, would you be able to give me some info on the feeding/housing needs of this species?
