is it ok for my finches to drink out of a pond?

Depending on the amount of organic matter that gets into the water, a pump alone will not keep the water completely clean, but it will keep it cleaner for longer.
Put simply: Moving the water around and especially any splashing from a fountain or waterfall will airate the water (ie: cause oxygen to be dissolved into the water). Still water will lose oxygen over time which will encourage the growth of harmul bacteria which thrive in low-oxygen conditions.
Also, some pumps have a sponge filter included wich will help remove some of the 'gunk' from the water.
