Sorry Tiaris I was correct in the 1st place.Your still a baby.
Many many years ago I woke up one morning to find a utility parked in my drive.
On inspection there were two older men sound asleep. They had arrived during the night after driving down from the Hunter
One was Tom Gibson and the other was Les Milton. They had heard that I had a few birds and a 1600km round trip was ok to take.
Sadly Tom passed away but old Les and I have been distant friends since then.
It would be great if Glen Hartin sat down with a tape recorder with Les as the experiences he has had were amazing.
Maybe you have done it already for us and all others Glen!!!!!!

Les had the best Australian bird egg collection by far that I've ever seen until NSW National Parks confiscated the lot in their infinite wisdom. Most of these were collected over many decades prior to native bird protection laws.

Hi all
I Don`t use egg & biscuit any more i use Couscous , this has been used for the last 3 years with Canary's and Zebras breeding 70 to 80 each year.
What i use is 1/3 cup of Couscous to 1/3 cup of cold water , leave for between 2 and 24 hours in the fridge , boil 3 eggs for 20 minutes let them go cold , put Couscous and eggs in a food processor and on high for about 3 seconds then feed to birds.

I learnt from the old guys while following the folks around too. But I'm a bit older than Tiaris. So I just use the traditional real egg and arrowroot biscut mix.

G'day!jusdeb wrote:Ive only used it the once , birds were not real keen and the smell of custard powder in the store bought egg biscuit kinda turned me off using it .
Wholemeal bread dried out in the oven ,crumbed then mixed with mashed egg works for me .
I breed canaries as well as zebs. I use crushed milk arrowroot or other plain biscuit with mashed hard boiled egg. The canaries and the finches love it and feed it to their young.
I have bought "egg and biscuit" mix, once or twice. I never noticed the custard smell but it looks to me like bran rather than biscuit and I have guessed it is dried egg powder and therefore the "custard smell".
Do you feed the shop "egg and biscuit" dry or wet?
I will probably need to go away for a weekend or two during the canary/finch breeding season ansd I am wondering about dry egg and biscuit for the day or two I am away for the canaries to feed their young.

So many babies , humans included have been raised on the humble milk arrowroot biscuit . Don't think you can go wrong with them .
Ill be getting some next time I'm down the street ... simple things hey .

Hi Madozzie and welcome to the forum.
There are varying grades of egg & biscuit mixes out there.
For many years the only egg & biscuit mix you could buy did not contain any egg (unless it was in the biscuit itself). The yellow stuff was actually custard powder- hence the smell Deb was referring to.
Over recent years some much better quality mixes have appeared that actually contain dried egg powder. These are more convenient for many people who are short on time & keep for longer. Of course using freshly boiled eggs is great- just beware of spoilage during warm and humid weather.

Research; evaluate;observe;act
I was about to buy some at the pet Shop but i wasent sure if my finches would like it.

Nathan shot it in there a try it. I find the more birds you have the more inclined everyone is to eat it. Lucky for me I have red faced parrot finches a they eat every bloody thing! Good teachers
