Nathan , Im going to be blunt, your aviary with more birds will be overstocked if you want to breed , do not put the red rump and cockatiel in with the finches. Do not think you dont have a rodent problem, you have birds there will be mice at some point over the years, you might not see them but they will be there. If you want other birds reduce your number of zebras, get a mate for the blue face. Learn from the birds you have, breed them successfully instead of just adding birds for the sake of it, i do not think you need a bigger aviary, you need more experience. You say you have had finches for 7 years, mate your still a pup but with time and patience you will become a legend. Dont take offence to the tone we are here to support.

Nathan. what do you think? do you think it will still be overcrowded? most people here have been largely in agreement as to how much space birds need. have you listened to that advice and worked out how much space that means you need?

again, how big a quarantine cage do you think you'll need? how many birds do you plan on putting in there? do you intend on halting the purchase of birds to instead focus on properly caring for those you have? you have some parrots that are much larger than finches - do you think its possible one of these birds may get sick at some stage?

Shox I have to connect the two aviarys I have already bort and paid for It and put together the two aviarys will be 6m long x 2m high x 2.5 wide ok I will make sure I make it rodent proof I will get a mate for my blue faced parrot finch and I am selling all 12 of my zebra finches ( evan look in the for sale section) Do you think 15 finches and 2 doves is over crowded (thats how meny I will have when I sell my Zebras) Thanks for being truthful.

Thanks Nathan

Nathan when people say that your aviery maybe over crowded means that for the space you have there are to many birds in there, with some birds they like more space around them such as cordons where as speices such as bengos you can have more in the same space as the cordons but this isn't an exact science. I find that with colony birds I can get 1 maybe 2 pair in extra than non colony birds ie- 2 pr cordons in a aviery 1mtrx3mter where as I could put 3-4pr of st helenas in. As I said Nathan this isn't exactly true for everybody. When overcrowding happens birds in stress which will lead to sick, injured, low breeding results and just some very unhappy finches. I have in my experience learnt the hard way and till this I still remind myself that I have enough birds. When you fill your aviery with all the birds you want where will you place all the young? A bensonsan has stated maybe time to change some speices over for new types that's what I do.
As for a quarantine cage they can range from a budgie breeding box size to a small aviery size, that remains up to you, but remember not to overcrowd these either.

-Nathan, that will be fine, how about trying this have 7 pairs of finches, keep 2 pair of gouldians, 1 pair of BFPF and have 1 pair of stars I found they bred better as a pair rather than three or four pairs, then choose three other different pairs of finches. Try to go with pairs that are not dominant, perhaps choose from plumheads, OB's, painted, ruddies etc, not another pair of parrot finch. Keep to varieties that will cost under $80 a pair, dont go for expensive birds at this stage all . Learn from them birds but the best advice I can give you at this point is to find someone that you can trust when buying birds, someone who will give you good advice, someone who will choose the right birds, the forum is a great place to gather information and learn, there are some fantastic and knowledgeable people, some of their knowledge blows my mind, but you still need to find someone outside the forum that you can speak to face to face to help you.

Shox do you think these birds will be a good mix 2 pairs of gouldians, 1 pair BFPF, 1 pair of stars and 2 pairs of double bars. The onley problem is that I can never track down eney good breeders dos eney one now eney contacts that I could use to buy some double barred finches I can never find breeders.

nathan, double bars are a lovely bird but i feel they breed better in colonies. Nathan, I will PM someone outside the forum for you to see and get advice. They will help you but you must not mention this person on the forum as they do not want their name mentioned, advertised or promoted. Do you agree?
Nathan Morleyy

Yes I agree shox. Thank you very much shox.

Thanks Nathan
