il tell u guys what happened 2 weeks ago when calling past a pet shop at my local shopping centre.

Went past to have a sticky and saw a cage crammed with Zebs, benglenese and some canaries with a totally dry bowl ( no water!!!! ) and another bowl with basically seed husks at the bottom, so i let the guy know there was no water in there and he said he would fix it up. i walked out of the shop, had lunch with my sister then went back 30 mins later to check if he filled the bowl... well no water still!!! so i went in there and spoke to another staff member telling her iv already spoken to the guy and it still hasn't been changed, her excuse was oh we do get busy and sometimes forget!!! ( all the animals should be taken care off first thing in the morning before the shop opens was my reply! ) i then waited in the shop till the seed and water was topped up, and whist waiting i was looking at there other cages and saw 2 sml/young quail which had nearly all there feathers plucked!!!!!!! they looked like sml chooks u buy at coles ready to throw in the oven! i told the girl i would like to buy these quail because they are being harassed by the other quail and canaries they were being housed with. her reply was they were not for sale, my reply was then why are they on display at the very front of the shop? they should be by themselves in there own cage!

2 days later they were still in that cage looking not happy, so i arked up more and they sold them to me at cost price and now i have 2 happy little quail living at my place with most of their feathers growing back. will look to find them loving homes soon if anyone can help, i think they are 2 males but not 100% sure.

some petstores/chains have to pull there finger out in regards to looking after their animals, its just not good for our little feather friends to be treated that way!

Yes deb have seen the same thing, just brought two hens 3 day ago with no tail feathers, found that when I got them home that they are missing back feathers too, got them in quarantine cage hit with mite and lice spray and have given them some heat, very disappointed that I could find any spare hens except for these two but now they are safe and looking a bit mire happy. I'll give them 3 weeks and see if their feathers are coming back. I'm finding this is happening more and more, thought at the start what breeder would pluck all the tail feathers but after seeing their backs I realized they were plucked.

Tue hens were African fires, lost the last two because of the cold, taken a few weeks to locate some hens, not many around and could afford the space for mire pairs.

Its a sad fact that animals are now seen as a commodity these days and with business's running on the supply and demand logistic it seems like any thing regardless of how it looks is fair game to be sold if it is seen to have a demand for it.
All we can do is only sell to places that look clean and tidy and have their birds displayed in a way we are happy with, and to never buy from anywhere that is unclean. That is really hard at times as it breaks my heart seeing some things, but I know I have to consider the birds/animals already in my care.
