Hi Slick,
I swapped from termites to maggots about 6 months ago and have had outstanding breeding results.
I had to go off termites because they were getting too hard to find/obtain. I then bit the bullet and got a fly breeding box.
I now have fly breeding down to a steady routine and they are minimal fuss compared to the result you will get from your breeding birds.
I have never bought maggots, only live pupae to get me started. I have experimented with freezing and keeping excess without much luck.
The maggots will only last a couples of days in the fridge (3-4 max) and will not freeze at all (their body's collapse).
Try breeding them yourself - I get tons of excess (which the quail and chooks LOVE) and it costs pennies per day to do it!
This winter so far I have bred 9 Strawberries (from 1 pair), 12 Ruddies (2 pair) 5 Cordons (1 pair) 7 RFPF (1 pair) ALL of which waited every morning for me to bring the maggots in! I also feed meal worms but the breeding birds mentioned don't show much interest in them for their young. I currently have Tri-Coloured PF with young (only a week old and still in the nest) who go for the meal worms so far, and don't touch the maggots!

Gerry Marantelli ( member ) has an offer too good to refuse concerning maggots if you feel like checking his post under" Maggots ".
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

Wow. That's great Dano... Good friend of mine is getting a setup to breed maggots . Looks like I'm going to get one as well .. Iv only heard good wraps about maggots..once setup gets going I can feed birds then go trout fishing...
If you feed the maggots bran flakes they will last a few days or more it also purifies them
