Hi everyone, I am a Wildlife Carer with Wildlife Victoria and today I found what I think is a Gouldian Finch, he has a plastic band on his foot which is white plastic with black lettering and the number 100 on it. He was found in the Dandenong region which is South East of Melbourne. I really don't know how to find where this little fella belongs and I'm hoping someone on here can point me in the right direction, I've very keen to get him back where he belongs. Oh yeah forgot to mention, the reason I have him is he hit a few windows at a warehouse and was a bit stunned but is totally alert and ok now. Any help would be great.
thank you, Leanne

Hi Leanne,
Unfortunately there isn't a central register for banded birds as most breeder buy their own bands. Although there are some that buy through clubs that may keep records of who gets what lettering.
However there may be someone here who has lost a bird and can tell you the lettering on the band to prove ownership.
I have added a pic of a gouldian so you can be sure that is the species you have.
This one is a Black head cock bird, there is also Red heads and Yellow heads. There are also variations, some can have a white chest, and also the back could be yellow. Any of these colour combinations is possible. Hens are a little less vibrant in colour.
Im sure if you cant find his owner you will find someone willing to give him a home.
Its nice of you to be taking care of this finch and trying to find out where he belongs. Good luck with your search and I hope you let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the info and the pic, this one has a red head, absolutely gorgeous. I'll ring Vets in the area he was lost to see if anyone has reported a lost finch. Fingers crossed and thanks again for replying.
