splended blue wrens

As I live in the inner city I find that we dont see a great variety of birds .About 2 weeks ago I was walking my dog on Tempe reserve right next to the International Airport when I could have sworn I saw a blue wren,iv never seen one except for a photo so thought I must have birds on the brain,I looked a few times more in that tree but could only see a little brown thing like a finch with a willy wag tails tail.I was quite excited as I thought it was something different.A few days ago I see Planet Ark have erected signs with the local birds and yes..there is the splended blue wren!!
It made me look harder and now three days in a row iv seen the most beautiful blue wrens and this afternoon I got to within less than 2 m of one ,his hen took off to another grass tree (they seen to spend most of their time in realy long clumps of native grass and call constantly) but he was a lot gamer and seemed to be giving me the once over as he fed on seeds I watched him for about 4 min then the hen came back and they just carried on feeding.
Such beautiful little birds ,I dont have a lot of time for my local council but I will give them credit for planning to be able to attract a colony of blue wrens to such an industrial area ..Iv seen at least 4 bright blue males and several brownish ones :D

Being in Sydney, it would be a Superb Blue Wren, or a Varigated Wren, Splendids don't come east of about Mungindi / Bogan River.

just checked on net and recognised the scientific name its actualy supurb fairy wren we have,they look to be quite common but im excited :D ..funny I hesitated over if it was splendid or supurb ..I have an awful memory!

Great news. I love trying to spot the wrens when I walk my dog. And listening for their calls. We have them living along the coastal walking path here. But our local council removed half their habitat. So am nagging them to plant more suitable habitat.

I live in Leichhardt and have dogs as well. Often take them for a walk along Cooks River, just west of your sighting. Plenty of wrens, thornbills, sometimes red head finches. The green corridor from the city along the light rail link (stops at Catherine st/Western distributor) and then continues with the freight line further west holds an amazing array of bird life. Wrens, monarchs, figbirds, etc etc and etc. The Callan Park area (where I walk the dogs often) is a another area rich in bird life. Black cockies, nesting kookas, magpies, butcherbirds etc. Must admit thought the wrens are good lookers, especially the males. Lucky enough to have a small colony which have been visiting my back yard for the past couple of weeks. Hope they stay.

Inner Sydney is going pretty well at this stage.

we have superbs swarming over Canberra at the moment, they're everywhere -especially on Uni campus!

wow,sounds great I must try and get over to callan park some day in spring ,I love seeing birds im not used to seeing.I think the focus on native trees in gardens is realy changing things for birds ,although I miss the common sparrow they seem to have dissapeared :roll: I know they are introduced but iv always loved them
