My shipment of woodies arrived today, thanks Gerry. Unfortunately the container had been squashed slightly, the lid was partly off and it there were millions and billions and trillions oi ants (thanks for nothing Aus Post :hothead: ).

I tried to sieve the ants out and spent more time chasing woodies around the house than catching ants. Can I freeze the woodies (and thus also kill the ants) and still successfully feed them to the chats?

Worth a shot. At work they freeze moths, roaches ect and the birds still eat them.

Sorry about that - let me know what you can salvage or what you have lost and we will replace them with your next order.

to seperate roaches from ants you can sieve them - if you wipe some canola oil around the top of the sieve the roaches will not get out.

Thanks for the offer Gerry. I'm sure it's not your fault and there were no ants on the front porch only inside the tube (and appeared on the bench through the small gap in the tube seal), would love to know where Aus Post have ants crawling through everyone's mail though.

I tried to sieve them but there were just too many and they were escaping from the tube even before they got into the sieve. The whole lot went in to the freezer straight away, so I either have lots or none still depending on your viewpoint. I'll try the birds with the frozen ones over the weekend when I can keep an eye on what's happening.

i hope they will still eat them - at least they won't run away and escape from the birds now.
Let me know how they go - i will still send more if you feel you have not got to use them even if it is the fault of Aus Post. We have a policy to replace loses that occur in transit even if it is not our fault - because its not your fault either and you paid to get usable food not dead insects - so please keep me informed and i will add extra to your next order.

Birds wouldn't touch them with a barge pole I'm afraid.

Gerry, have sent you a pm.

Frozen Wood Roaches
Because I had seen how easily they seem to escape I was determined not to have that happen at my place.
I was breeding them in Tucker Box Freezer Cabinets and painted the solution around the top so they would crawl out.
I would harvest each colony and collect them in a plastic bucket place glad wrap over the top and simply put the lot into a chest deep freezer.Once frozen and very dead I put them in plastic containers and once again stored them in a freezer.
Being dry they don't freeze into a big lump but little cold bullets but softened when thawed out.
They were fed out this way and non escaped, all were eaten.
The Magpie Robins and to a lesser degree Mesias,Pekin Robins and BulBuls didn't worry one bit about them being dead.
If you are feeding the contents of a moth trap and you don't want them to fly away when fed out just stick the container full into the freezer for about 8 min. then tip them out and the birds will get stuck into them while they are cold and slow moving.
