I have lost 3 finches in the last 3 weeks
The first 2 were zebs who were in the same cage and the 3rd was my double bar hen - she has been very puffy for the last few days and found it difficult to fly from the food to her nesting basket and she died 30 minutes ago.
I dont know if I am doing something wrong but its heartbreaking having to get out their little bodies, and now by double bar cock is very vocal and keeps flying around the cage searching for her as they were the only 2 in together

It is sad when one is left behind . Im sorry you have lost 3 birds .

If you are concerned that you may have slipped up then go back to basics and do some research of bird husbandry . It may be a bad run of luck and I hope things improve for you .
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

I'm sorry :|

I know that there is a fungal infection going around zebra finches in Melbourne- I've lost 6 to it (including my beloved Fatty Fatty Bumba who weighed a whopping 17g!), possibly more as I had a few 'unknown' deaths around the same time, and the Deakin University colony in Geelong has lost several to the same thing. Are you providing soaked/sprouted seed? Make sure any soaked seed is disinfected (we use Virkon, and Deakin uses F10) as they provide a perfect habitat for fungal spores.

Hi Samantha,
Just make sure they are out of the night breezes, they cant cope with drafts. Cage or aviary needs to be well covered where they sleep :)
Also, a friend of mine lost Zebs as she was feeding them Lettuce as their only source of green food, they have a difficult time digesting it.
Sometimes happens in a small colony.
All the best
