Hello everyone I presented my twins 2 beautiful birds for christmas and to disappointment and dispair we lost one the next day and the other the day later. We were devastated. We investigated the scene I guessed it may have been a cat or the Indian mynas.

Sam we thank you for the birds and your advice pre and post disaster. We will build a new aviary with added features to protect new birds.

Our whole family are excited about having finches and having them as part of our family.

I guess as newbies we have a lot to learn.

Welcome Guys - small world this internet!
There's heaps of info on here about gouldians and lots of very knowledgeable nutters, so you'll fit in well.
Not sure if you got my message via our favourite neighbourhood gossip, but sounds like butcher birds got them to me. Hope the kids have gotten over the trauma and you're welcome to another pair once you get the new cage organised.

Thanks for the welcomes, the kids did recover and we will be keen to build a new avairy instead of using our purchased pre fab variety.

I have been reasurching the needs ofnthe birds and believe we will overcome the set back with the knowledge gained via Internet. It's amazing how much information is out there. We will probably build a flight cage of about 2.4 m long 700 high and 500 deap. It will be off the ground and at a height the kids can stand and watch them.

There is a lot of pictures of many cages/avairys on the net which I have seen but I guess the things the birds want is somewhere to feel safe and the spread their wings a bit.

Do you think my size is ok for the two birds and possibly their offspring?

What should I make the floor from that will be easy to clean and not disintegrate/ swell or otherwise be destroyed with washing.

What size wire on the aviary/cage?

I am getting the feeling square mesh, and I have seen some talk on the materiel, should it be stainless steel, do other metals case problems for finches?

Thank you
Wayne

Yes thanks Sam , Mrs Mangles Aka G. Has passed on your message. I believe we do have a butcher bird , a black one who visits us. Didn't know what it was until I just googled butcher birds. I thought it may have been cats which we have visits from frequently as there is evidence of feathers around the bottom of the cage against the side wall ie bottom edges, which looks like a bird has been dragged through the gaps in the wire.

Whatever it was we have plans to beat the issue.

We also have backyard visits from a pair of wagtails (which I love) , a pair of native pigeons, a pewee, cockatoos and had a Indian mynar problem last year but trapped and disposed of many which made an impact last year. We had a couple nest under our covered area in some jasmine but I sorted that out too as I thought bit was these two who also may have attached our finches as the finches where under the covered area after Christmas unveiling.

Thanks again Sam for the birds.
