Hi,
I have been planning the construction of my new aviary for a little while now and thought I might ask you all for some advice.
I was initially planning to just put a concrete slab and tin aviary down but I thought there may be a better way to use the space including the garden box on the hill.
The space is 5 meters long along the fence line plus one meter if you include the small garden boxed bit at the end.
Naturally the wife does not want me to take over the whole yard but I think there is a smart way to design an aviary for maximum space and visual appeal/benefit.
The hill bit in the garden box extends to 2.5 meters in length when you move 3 meters from the pool fence.
I was thinking of making a timber aviary in the garden and use the space rather than build around it...
Does anyone have any experience building decent sized aviaries in small/tricky spots????
Any info or images of member aviaries build on hills or in gardens would be a great help!!
Thanks
El Feroz

Here's a pic of my aviary on a steep slope. It's about 8m long by 3m deep by 3m high at the front and about 1.9m high at the back. The shelter is to the right partially out of shot.
Does your land end at the pool fence? I assume it does, in which case I'd be using the whole sloped/wood chipped area (and maybe nick a bit of the grassed area if you can get permission). And which direction is north?
I've certainly bred heaps of finches in this one over the last 7 or so years, but I've got a few changes in mind and a major extension continuing further up the hill.Does your land end at the pool fence? Just checking. You want to build from the corner where the 2 types of fencing meet? Do you intend to go 5 metres along the metal or wooden fence?

I was thinking to put two 1.5 X 2.26 m aviaries on the flat and maybe a larger aviary on the slope in the garden similar in concept to the picture posted above.finchbreeder wrote:Just checking. Although I do admit there may be other better ways of doing it.

Sorry to fully answer the question, I intend to go approx 5 meters along the pool fence and 4 -5 meters across the from of the timber fence.finchbreeder wrote:Just checking. I may end up with two kit aviaries along the pool fence and a longer one along the garden bed and use it as a planted flight.

The photos were taken facing to the south. I would build the aviary basically facing the camera (north. I like what you have done and I think it would be good for our yard. There would be plenty of sunlight and minimal drafts.SamDavis wrote:Here's a pic of my aviary on a steep slope. It's about 8m long by 3m deep by 3m high at the front and about 1.9m high at the back. Our land does end at the pool fence. From the pool fence to our other boundary fence it is roughly 30 meters but I will have a hard time convincing "the boss" to let me build any larger than the areas shown in the photo unfortunately...not unless I want to live with the birds as she puts it.

"The photos were taken facing to the south."
That is good because the best side to have open is the east side. So would be facing the house for better viewing.

I would excavate along the timber fence then build small retaining wall, when the ground is level then build an Aviary. Otherwise you could have problems with mice burrowing and god knows what else.
