hi gentle finch-folk,

after much deliberating i have narrowed my aviary down to a species aviary - and i chose redbrows!

i've sold my double-bars (who abandoned nest after nest - not sure why) and longtails (will get back to them in the future) and expanded the redbrows, so i now have 12 redbrows in the aviary, and that's all for this year.

i'm really interested in watching flock behaviour, and the calls and sounds i hear from the redbrows without the chatter of other birds is very soothing. it's lovely to see the birds interacting without having to negotiate other species.

the plan is to let them winter and see what breeding takes place in spring, and then i'll think about the aviary's inhabitants for 2013!

below, a bit of three-way preening, and 11 of the 12 birds.

p.s - the bird on the right in the first photo is ancient, has lost her red stripe, is going bald, but still sprightly!

Bird look good.

Red brows are one of my favourite Aus finches. I have 30 - 40 in my yard on any given afternoon. They are always trying to get the seed from my canaries.

They have a pleasant disposition and I can get quite close to the wild ones here now.

Good luck with it!

thanks for the comments. since i've increased the numbers, the wild redbrows have been much more frequent visitors - maybe the calls carry further, or maybe it's because there's a lot of them... anyways, it's great to have the wild ones hopping around the camelia bushes outside the aviary or crawling along the wire while the ones inside do the same!
