Redbrows, Diamonds and pictorellas for looks and personality (with double bars, red cheeked cordons and painted firetails coming in close behind). Redbrows are extremely quick, agile, colourful, inquisitive and have such a beautiful little song. Diamonds are just great to look at, will defend their mate, young and nest ferociously, and are very "handsome" birds. Pictorellas are only new to me, but their constant contact calls, odd colours, white chest, black faces and chilled ways are just a great addition to my aviary. Just wish They'd breed a bit more for me!

I'm pretty sure Jayburd is correct, unless they've received new OB weavers recently, which at current prices and the financial situations of most zoos is very unlikely.

My personal favourites are violet-eared waxbills (absolutely stunning in the flesh), orange bishop weavers and crimson finches.
When it comes down to personality it is hard to go past the humble cuban finch.

Of course this is all personal opinion only and thank goodness we all differ!!

Jayburd

I am not 100% sure what they were. I am not an expert on finches and only used my limited knowledge. I have searched the two varities and they definately looked like OBW from photos that I have seen on the internet.

Totally agree with Myzomela, Cuban Finches ooze charm. Second and third for me with personality goes to Lessers and Blue Caps,

Looks - Lessers, Goulds and Violet Eared , not particular order.

Re Orange Bishops, they do look similar and there is still confusion even over seas.
The Birds in Adelaide are Grenadiers, the major difference Grenadiers have black above the beak and black below the beak
O/Bishops the same on top but Orange under the beak. There are other differences but the above is the best way to ID them.

Favorite finch looks wise would have to be the Violet Eared Waxbill by a country mile, then O/Bishop Weaver, then numerous but maybe
the Painted. As for my favorite bird the Crimson Chat would be number one in looks, aviary manners and I just think they are terrific little birds.
Pekin Robins close and the best Song Bird would have to be the Sky Lark. The males sing from dawn until dusk during the breeding season.

Looks - too hard - there is the brightness of some of those that are very colourful in contrast to the monocromatic of the Lonchuras - both great in their own ways.
Personality - Cubans - Painteds - Goudians
Song - Canarys - Cubans - Javas

Emblema x 3 .

They have that big beak .
Quirky personality .
Funny noise like a overwound spring .
The only finch that I can catch by hand and that will land on me in the aviary .

Tough as old boots if kept dry .
Accept that some days you are the pigeon, and some days you are the statue.

This is a good question with so much diversity in answers.
Looks- very hard crimsons, diamonds, gouldians
Personality- Cubans, painteds, strawberries.

So many finches to choose from so hard, can I also put down I like them all and each have beauty as well as different personalities which makes them all good.

Personally like the double bars, any of the red-brows, red-earred firetails and jacarinis - oops that 4 isn't it!
