Hey guys, just wondering what your opinions were on small ponds in your aviary.

I have a 3m x 2m x 2m aviary and wanted to put a small pond in there so i could have running water for my finches.

your input would be great

i chose not to, due to a few reasons,i have concrete floors, to much work keeping it clean, running a power source out to my aviary to power pumps etc, mozzies everywhere due to water source, young drowning, yes they may look nice but not practical for me.

The biggest issue is depth vs surface area, it can't be more than a inch or two for some way in to the pond. If it's that shallow all the way around it's not really a pond it's a big dish. I'm with Misso, looked at it, wanted it but gave up trying to make it work.

Having a pond can look great and make the aviery have a real special look to them. Alot of work needs to go into maintaining a pond as well as some precautions that will need to be taken.

it is only a small shallow one. i have a black irragation pipe run to it with a hose adapter so i can run water into it.
i have seen my finches drink from it but was worried about mozzie larvae growing in the pond though

If it's deep enough you could try a couple of WA Pygmy Perch to keep down the mozzies.

Not usually.
You could try mosquito fish to keep the larvae numbers down, but as others have said it can be difficult maintaining upkeep.
Other factors to consider are how much light will the pond receive? The greater the light, the more algae/pond weeds will grow.
Do you have any aviculturists in your area who maintain ponds in their aviary? It would be good to go through the pros and cons with them.

it doesnt get alot of light. Looking that there are more cons than pros. I might rip it out and put some grasses in.
