Not as yet, I was thinking of building another next to it and then adding a safety door to it. Kind of gives me an excuse to get a few more birds!

So what is everyone breeding at the moment?

Any suggestions on birds for a colony aviary, I am looking to breed but would rather keep a number of birds. I dont mind keeping one species or mixing.

With the size avairy you have say a pair each of whatever 3 types you like best. But without a safety door I would not risk finches, as they will get out past you.

Maybe go for hardy free breeding species that don't need livefood. Painteds, gouldians and stars would be my suggestion. Each have quite different behaviour and also none of these require a licence in NSW.
Is the door a half height sliding one? If so it should be ok if you're careful and can setup a feed door so you don't need to enter the aviary too often.

Yep door is half height, I will eventually build two more aviaries next to it with a safety door on the end. The aviary is 1.2m wide 2.4m long and around 2m high. Would 3 pairs be ok, can you put in more if i colony breed a single species or is 3 species of different types better?

In my view for your aviary size 3 pairs is best whether a colony or 3 different species. Personally I'd go for 3 species with different habits to avoid bickering. In my experience single pairs of a species in mixed aviaries breed heaps better than colonies.
