Is it just the photo, or do they look like like cinnamons? I have normals that are quite a bit darker? Very nice set up by the way. I gotta get me one of those milk crates!

Are there eggs yet or is something eating the eggs?
The hen needs like a nice quiet little spot to sit undisturbed.
Mice getting in the cage can disturb the quails trying to sit on eggs

I'm surprised, I thought theyd number in The millions by now for you!!
They're not fussy about nesting sites, one determined hen of mine even hatched five chicks in a crack between two rocks, right next to the food station, where she could just reach out and grab a few seeds. However, it's also where I put their food (obviously) so I was always moving around there... Didn't fuss her in the slightest.
Brett, how many do you have and what sexes? Excess males may be having an impact.
Mortisha, mine actually chased the mice, very funny to watch... But that was in the daytime. At night it's probably a different matter.

mine actually chased the mice
that would be good to see!.
Think it depends on how nervy they are - some of mine could coexist with mice but I've also had others that are scared of mice and cause chaos at night if there is anything strange running around the aviary floor with them.

Yeah...
I don't think anything really co exists with mice

it's a bit of an armed stalemate.
Some birds are a lot mor resilient than you'd expect, I once lost a parrotfinch which I found in the morning on the floor next to the body of a mouse... Looks like they took each other out.
A sad loss from the parrot finch, but a victory as well. It was hard to decide whether to be happy or sad!
As we speak I can hear my dove flapping, not actually flying but just flapping his wings for no apparent reason... He does that at night. Perhaps to excersize. Scared all hell out of the red brows when he started it, but after two days they'd calmed down and now they all live in peace

Sorry I think I hijacked your topic a bit there Harv/Brett

No mice.
They have not even looked like building a nest yet.
There is only one pair in the avairy.
I might try another female.???

Does sound a bit odd - mine lay eggs like they are chooks.
I'm usually throwing out eggs so I'm not overrun with quails.
Maybe she is egg bound.
They have not even looked like building a nest yet.
If you do find any eggs you can help the nest building along by putting some grass in a circle shape on the ground and putting al the eggs you find in the middle. It encourages them to lay more eggs there and if they start to get broody they will start to arrange the nest around themselves.
Bit like this lot. They are camping at night on 7 eggs but when one hen decides to sit she'll will warn the others off and do the 24hr sitting alone.

I just got some a few weeks back, at what age do they mature, I assumed they took 6 months or so and wasn't expecting any eggs until maybe mid year?
