I bought these boxes from Phil Brauer, $12 and the same to freight them to Alice. I would like to see some holes on the side as well but the birds went ok in these. Like Spanna said, plenty of seed and water, you can silicon the water dish in but do that a few days before you send them. I dont worry too much about water but i put in half a handful of soaked seed, dry seed and a few thin slices of lebanese cucumber.

Water can be easily added by just putting in a small dish with cotton wool in the water to stop it spilling. Had that method work fine.

The one I used was from Birdworld, but any of sturdy construction would do. Birdworld are dearer more than likely.

Thanks Tony. I will check them out. I think the design might have been similar to DBs one.
Poitta, saw the gumtree ones but a bit far to drive me thinks. There is a guy in Balcatta who makes boxes, might have to check what he has. Will also check with City Farmers as I can't remember what they have. The box with the hole is a small one so probably not great for a few hours...

This is the thread tino was meaning

Both boxes I have received had the door screwed shut, an excellent idea.
I have had birds sent to me in a slightly different box as below. Great travel box also. Small holes all around the box. This is a larger box than in the other thread, 6 birds arrived in this size. It has the water container in the corner. Birds arrived in excellent condition.

I have not shipped birds. But think that as they are going in or out of WA water would be essential. As when people fly within WA we seldom leave or arrive at the designated time. Of course the birds may be on a different plane with a more reliable schedule.

One thing that should also be mentioned is that if you have a large freight box then more than likely you will be charged out at a cubic meterage rate. So making the box really light really defeats the purpose if its excessively large - or making it small if ifs too heavy.
I also find that flywire positioned under the birdwire which covers seems to have a settling effect on the birds.
With the water dishes - liquid nails works well too!
