I am mainly a finch person but Ringnecks are really a good looking bird. We had a feral population in Sans Souci (Sydney) when I was young (read 40 yrs ago). Probably 50-60 birds. They were fairly common as household pets . As years went by natives became more of a "new" thing. So the Ringnecks sort of went away and were replaced by Princesses, then came the colour mutations. Yes, they are noisy, but they really are beautiful looking bird with heaps of character. Next rung up is the Alexandrine, looks similar, but near twice as big. Now that is a challenge!

The best of this group (Asiatics)and the only one that I keep, is the Plumhead, stunning colours, small size, soft twittering call and easy to keep.

Wow,
Tint, that is stunning looking bird. Did not even know they existed. You lucky devil. Gee, I thought the ringneck was good looking, but this bird throws a spanner (no, not Spanna) in the works.

If I were to stray away from the aussies the plum heads and moustache parrots would be my choice.

I need to come up with a name for it too!!

Only problem is, I don't want to call it a girl name if it turns out to be a boy :(

My dad had one that we called Gunga short for Gunga Din and a yellow one called Tonto , its kind of funny looking back and not realising that my dad may have been a bit racist.. but then again we had a galah called db short for Dumb bird, another on one called rag nuts, a sulfer crest called bruce .

Poor old bruce he had a hard life , he was bought for a tv commercial made by channel nine many many years ago, Dad was given bruce, because bruce was developing a very nasty speach problem , he kept asking the ladies to lift the skirt and the blokes to F off, we didnt know this till a week or 2 after he settled in and the neighbour complaining about the coarse language from us kids . Dad is a Butcher by trade so he would bring a marrow bone home for the bird every day and it would shut him up for hours, until 2 months thats when old bruce started imitating the kids swing , we just thought it was the kids next door till the neighbour decided to have a go at a Dad again , so off my uncles farm he went they found him a mate and they have bred many a youngster from him and still is in the family 30 years on , or well his progeny is anyway. well my dad was a bits nuts when it came to naming birds I am sure you come up with a good name for it....pete

Noisy birds .... depending on your neighbours a noisy bird can bring the your whole flock down .
One noisy bird will bring the authorities around which leads to all birds being under the microscope .

Myself running a "few" extra birds here am having a hard time keeping the Corella quiet and with both sides moving on I can only hope the new neighbours are bird lovers .

Plan B is a lovely lady on acreage who has fallen in love with Bubba , will be a sad day and one which we probably should have foreseen when taking on a big mouth bird .

All things to consider .

Hahah Pete, my big fat cats name is Bruce!

I was thinking of calling her (if it's a her) Neela - as it means sky blue in Hindi, and that's pretty much what colour she is..

Or Sarika, which is Hindi for parrot..

Lame I know, but I figured, hey she's an Indian Ring Neck :P

Neela sounds good and allows for either sex. And naming like this is good. My daughter named her Siamese fighting fish - red dragon - in Japanese. Pity I cant spell it. And naturally he is red and agressive.

So HE was delivered to my work today. Well we're thinking it might be a he now... A ring has developed around the neck over the past few weeks that the finder has had it...

Hrm.. Still stumped for names, as now I'm torn. But maybe I will stick with Neela if it can be a unisex name..
My dad's name was Neil, so it could almost be like a little tribute name to him too
