Congrats Deb

How long ago did they hatch Deb? Was your other male a hen after all or did you get another one?

I really didnt think they would nest this time of year .

This is a different pair DB . These are the first pair I bought .
No the other pair were both males , Ive since sold 1 and am hoping for a hen from the first pair to pair up with the remaining boy .

Apparantly March onwards they breed around here thus the insulated nest box ...Hopefully the hen and the nest box will keep the bubs warm enough to get to the perch .

Hatched in the last few days ..tiny little pink things .

Sounds like captive hoodeds still have their wire crossed a bit, march onwards would be the ideal time to breed futher north as the seed heads would all be drying and the country side in general is starting to dry out but still warm.Futher south, March sucks hence the need for insulated nest boxes.Well done and good luck with the chicks,they are a stunning bird.Could even be tempted

March to may DB . Ive been talking to a fella at Taree with young in the nest too .

NMambo yes this is the big worry now , hoping the hen and the insulated box are enough to keep them warm ..I thought about bringing them in and hand rearing but .... I want to breed aviary birds able to tolerate local temps .

From about 7 days is the critical period. I have four young in the nest at the moment and they are heated with a reptile heating pad in the base of the box as she stopped brooding at about 8 or 9 days. You could check at dusk each night and if she is not in with them, bring the box inside until dawn then put it back for the day. once they are feathered there is no longer a problem, Good luck!
