I would hate to start an argument but I believe that there are 17 finches as the gouldian would be a mirror image of itself. That's a bit off topic to the post but I have no opinion on this subject believe its in the hands of the higher powers.

Can I ask one of the moderators to detail the extent of the "spamming" problem? Are there tens, hundreds or thousands of daily spam attempts from automated robotic new members? Or is there the odd attempt from columbian hyacinth macaw selling dimwits? It matters whether the spammers are people or automated robotic computer spammers. Vince's comments relate to the automated computer variety who are unable to answer simple silly questions like "How many legs does a 1 headed bird have?". If its the automated spammers who are the issue then an automated system to get rid of them makes much more sense than moderators having to manually trash them.
In addition, under the current "5 moderated posts" rule, do we have any idea how many legitimate new members never reach 5 posts and hence do not continue through to full member rights? I'm just concerned that on the Internet people expect instant feedback/response - even if it's just seeing their post appear on the forum. For me, waiting minutes for a post to appear means I've moved on to some other site and it then requires effort to return. Doing this 5 times is frustrating and would likely mean the loss of some good people before they've even started. On the other hand, maybe the current approach filters out all but the dedicated finchos.
